  • Easy Control of Sealant Application Thickness

  • Non-Bonding Surface – No Additional Bond Breaker Required

  • Compatible with All Cold-Applied Sealants

  • CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is a round, flexible polyethylene foam with an exterior "skin" designed to control sealant depth and promote proper joint design. The backer rod serves as a backing material for elastomeric and other cold-applied sealants preventing excessive use of the sealant. The backer rod’s non-bonding surface prevents sealants from sticking and allows the sealant to move and flex reducing stress at adhesion points improving sealant performance.

CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod is available for purchase in the following diameters - 1/4" to 2" (7 to 50mm)
CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod will not absorb water or wick water to joint walls, which could cause adhesive failure. It is compatible with cold-applied sealants, and its round shape promotes the preferred "hourglass" shape for joint sealants.

    Temperature Limits:
    -45°F to 160°F (-43°C to 71°C)

    Application:
Backer Rod is commonly used in expansion/control joints with cold-applied sealants. Typical applications include curtain walls, construction partitions, precast panels, parking decks, door and window frames, coping, floor and deck joints, horizontal traffic joints, and building rehab projects.

    Size Selection:
When choosing a CRL Closed Cell Backer Rod, it is important for proper size selection as it controls the depth of the sealant bead and acts as a bond breaker to prevent back-side adhesion. It must be oversized approximately 25-50% wider than the joint to ensure a tight fit.

    Storage:
Store in a well-ventilated are. Do not store products in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources and open flames.

    Joint Preparation:

    • New Joints: Clean thoroughly to remove form-release agents, curing compounds, or debris. Ensure the joint is clean and dry before applying sealant.

    • Repairing Old Joints: Remove all old sealant or filler. Use wire brushing and air blasting for effective cleaning. If using an air compressor, ensure it has moisture and oil traps.

    Installation Instructions:

    1. Prepare the surface by following the Joint Preparation directions.

    2. Measure and Select: Choose the correct backer rod size based on the joint width.

    3. Set Depth: Install the backer rod at the depth recommended by the sealant manufacturer, ensuring the sealant forms an "hourglass" shape.

    4. Use the Right Tools: Install with a blunt tool or roller. The Cat. No. T607CU605 or Cat. No. SBRR for smooth installation.

THE PRODUCT CAN COME IN DIFFERENT SHADES / TONES, BUT THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF THE PRODUCT.

Do not tear, puncture, crease, over-compress, or stretch the Backer Rod during installation. Always select the correct size for the joint. Do not use with hot-applied sealants or hot melt adhesives where surface temperatures exceed 160°F (71°C).
